A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Hafsat Abdulhamid, has restored three broken-down boreholes in the Dandagoro community of Batagarawa Local Government Area, Katsina State, providing residents with much-needed access to potable water.
The boreholes, which had been out of service for over two years, were officially inaugurated on Sunday. The breakdown had left the community struggling for clean water, forcing residents to travel long distances to meet their daily water needs. Abdulhamid’s efforts are part of her Community Development Service (CDS) project, a core component of the NYSC program aimed at improving local communities.
Abdulhamid expressed concern over the hardship the community had endured due to the lack of potable water. “The situation worried me deeply,” she said. “Residents were trekking long distances to access water, and some children were already suffering from waterborne diseases.”
She praised the Batagarawa Local Government Chairman, Bala Garba-Tsanni, for his prompt support and financial backing of the initiative. “The chairman didn’t hesitate to approve my proposal, and I hope other local leaders will follow his example,” Abdulhamid added.
At the project’s commissioning ceremony, Ibrahim Sa’idu, the NYSC Coordinator for Katsina State, commended Abdulhamid for her dedication and ingenuity. He urged community leaders to support similar projects initiated by corps members, noting that these projects provide long-term benefits to the communities they serve.
The village head of Dandagoro, Muttaka Magaji, also expressed his gratitude, highlighting the community’s prolonged struggle for clean drinking water. He noted that, for two years, their pleas for help had gone unanswered by local politicians. Magaji offered prayers for Abdulhamid, the NYSC, and the nation, thanking God for finally answering their call for help.
This initiative not only alleviates a critical need for the Dandagoro community but also exemplifies the positive impact of corps members on the communities they serve.
