Eshanekpe Israel, also known as Akpodoro, the Mayor of Urhoboland and a former militant leader in the Niger Delta, has urged the organizers of the planned October 1 protest to reconsider their actions in the spirit of patriotism and national solidarity. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Abuja on Monday, Akpodoro emphasized the significance of Nigeria’s Independence Day, marking 64 years since the nation gained freedom from British rule, and stressed that the day should be respected and celebrated.
At the gathering, Akpodoro urged Nigerians to focus on celebrating the nation’s unity and progress, despite the challenges it faces. “Every nation has its challenges, but none are insurmountable,” he remarked, adding that Nigeria has managed to remain an indivisible entity, which is something worth celebrating.
Akpodoro praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, describing his efforts to revitalize the country’s economy as a key achievement since independence. “President Tinubu has been breathing life into Nigeria’s socio-economic fabric, setting the nation on a path of renaissance,” he said, while calling on citizens to exercise patience with the administration as it works to address national issues.
The ex-militant leader also highlighted Nigeria’s resilience, claiming that the nation is stronger than many global economies. He called for an increase in patriotism among Nigerians, urging them to stop criticizing their leaders excessively and instead contribute to national unity. “A people deserve their leaders, and we must support the government at all levels to achieve national glory,” he stressed.
In a bold statement, Akpodoro called on President Tinubu to remove all underperforming ministers, accusing many of lacking the proficiency to handle their responsibilities. He specifically called for the dismissal of all ministers except Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, whom he praised for his dedication and effectiveness. According to Akpodoro, Wike is the only minister who has been truly functional under the Tinubu administration, while others have failed to deliver tangible results.
