In the face of mounting economic challenges, President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain patient with his administration. This plea comes just a few months after acquiring a new presidential jet, a move that has drawn criticism given the country’s financial struggles.
During his Independence Day address, marking Nigeria’s 64th anniversary, President Tinubu acknowledged the widespread difficulties faced by Nigerians, including rising unemployment and skyrocketing living costs. He urged the public to persevere as his government works to address these issues.
“Once again, I plead for your patience,” Tinubu stated. “I understand the struggles many of you are enduring. Our administration is aware of the hardships caused by rising costs and the search for meaningful employment.”
He reassured the public that their concerns have not gone unheard, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate the suffering of citizens.
This call for patience follows a controversial decision to take delivery of a new presidential aircraft, sparking outrage among many Nigerians who viewed it as a lavish expense amidst widespread economic hardship.
Since the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates under Tinubu’s leadership, petrol prices have surged from N145 to nearly N1,000, while the naira has depreciated to around N1,700 to the dollar. These policies have triggered unprecedented inflation, exacerbating the cost of living crisis.
In August, the growing discontent led to widespread protests, with thousands of Nigerians taking to the streets for 10 consecutive days, decrying the economic situation.
Tinubu’s latest appeal for patience has prompted mixed reactions. Many Nigerians have taken to social media to express their frustration, some dubbing him “T-Pain,” a play on his name and the pain felt under his administration.
“To cut the long story short, T-Pain says there will be light at the end of the tunnel,” commented X user @EdacheAbuh.
