Ondo 2024: Youths Demand Removal of INEC REC in Protest

A group of youths in Ondo State staged a protest on Wednesday, calling for the immediate removal of Mrs. Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC). The protest, which took place in Akure, saw the youths marching through major roads and eventually converging at the INEC State office in Alagbaka. They carried placards with various inscriptions, including demands such as “INEC Must Do the Needful” and “We Are Demanding REC Removal.”

The protesters voiced concerns over the REC’s alleged partisan involvement, accusing Mrs. Babalola, who assumed office on December 18, 2023, of having close ties with a particular political party, which they claim could compromise the integrity of the upcoming November 16 governorship election.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Mr. Ijanusi Olawale accused the REC of unprofessional conduct, warning that her continued presence could undermine the transparency of the election. He emphasized the youths’ demand for a free, fair, and unbiased electoral process.

“We demand a transparent election, free from bias, where INEC upholds its responsibility to the people of Ondo State,” Olawale said.

In response, Mr. Biodun Amosu, the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Ondo State, addressed the protesters, commending them for their peaceful demonstration. He assured the youths that their concerns would be relayed to the national headquarters of the electoral body for appropriate action.

“Peaceful protests are a democratic right, and you have exercised it responsibly,” Amosu said. He reassured the crowd that INEC was committed to ensuring that their votes would count in the upcoming election.

“We understand your concerns. However, with your polling agents in place and vigilant, you can protect your votes. Our officers here are dedicated to ensuring a free and fair election in Ondo State,” he added. Amosu also emphasized that the allegations against the REC would be investigated by the national office.

“Rest assured, the issues you’ve raised will be addressed, but most importantly, your votes will count,” he concluded.
