NYSC Clarifies ₦77,000 Corps Members Allowance Delay

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has provided clarification regarding the implementation of the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members, confirming that the increase has not yet been enforced.

This update follows reports that despite the government’s approval of the allowance increase, corps members received the previous ₦33,000 allowance in September.

In an official press release issued by Caroline Embu, the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations for the NYSC, it was explained that while the increase aligns with the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and was intended to take effect in July, delays from the Federal Government have slowed the process.

“Everything is a process,” Embu stated in an interview with SaharaReporters. “After the pronouncement, the government has to work on the logistics before payments can be made. It’s not automatic.”

Corps members have expressed disappointment over the unchanged ₦33,000 payment in September, with one anonymous corps member commenting, “They haven’t increased it yet. People around me received ₦33,000 instead of the promised ₦77,000.”

Embu emphasized that the NYSC is not directly responsible for handling payments, which are managed by the Federal Government. She also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the timing of the increase, adding, “I can’t confirm if it will be implemented this October. Like everyone else waiting for the minimum wage adjustment, we are also waiting.”

The delay has sparked frustration among corps members, many of whom were hoping for the immediate rollout of the increased allowance to ease financial pressures.
