Heavy shooting has been reported at Rumuepirikom Community, the hometown of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, amid the ongoing local government elections in Rivers State.
According to a source, earlier in the day, unidentified individuals entered the community, warning residents not to participate in the polls. As electoral officers were about to arrive at the ward in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, armed assailants stormed the area, firing shots and taking control of the vicinity.
The gunmen, whose identities remain unknown, created an atmosphere of fear, forcing many residents to stay indoors and avoid the voting process.
Reports indicate that one person sustained a gunshot wound and has been rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
