The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has announced that the implementation of the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance for corps members has been delayed due to funding issues.
The Federal Government had approved an increase in the monthly stipends for corps members from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000, with the new rate taking effect from July 2024.
In a statement from the NYSC, the increment was confirmed through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by the Commission’s Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Despite the official communication, corps members did not receive the increased allowance for September 2024.
Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service on Saturday, Brigadier General Ahmed explained that the payment of the new allowance is being held up because the government has not yet released the necessary funds.
He further disclosed that NYSC staff were also affected, as their own salary increase, approved four to five months ago, has yet to be implemented.
“Not only corps members but even our staff members’ salaries were increased about four to five months ago, but this has not yet been implemented. We are hopeful that the new pay will be implemented soon, though the funds have not yet been released to us,” Ahmed said.
He added, “While the information we have does not specify exactly when the new allowance will be paid, we have been assured that corps members’ monthly allowance has officially been increased from July 29, 2024.”
