The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) announced on Saturday that 23 states across the country, along with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have implemented the new retirement age of 65 for teachers. This policy, introduced in 2020 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, increased the retirement age from 60 to 65 years.
Titus Amba, the National President of the NUT, confirmed the implementation in a statement obtained in Abuja. He praised the states and the federal government for adopting the policy, noting its significance for the education sector.
“We are pleased to note that 23 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the Federal Government have implemented the new retirement age for their teachers,” Amba said. He further urged the remaining states to adopt the policy without delay, stressing that it would allow schools to continue benefiting from the expertise of experienced teachers and help address staffing shortages.
The NUT also expressed concern over the stagnation of teachers at the directorate level, particularly those in Unity Schools. The union criticized the lack of declared vacancies, which has led to the career stagnation of teachers who have dedicated themselves to the profession.
“These officers, who have chosen teaching as a career and are performing their duties in classrooms, need encouragement. They should be allowed unhindered career progression and be promoted as and when due, just like their counterparts in the State Teaching Services,” the union stated.
The call for equal treatment of teachers highlights the need for reforms that will ensure fair career advancement opportunities within the teaching profession across Nigeria.
