Over 250 captains from various units and formations of the Nigerian Army have commenced the Captain to Major Practical Promotion Examination (CMPPE), a critical step in their career progression. The examination is designed to sharpen their skills and equip them to address the country’s pressing security challenges more effectively.
Speaking at the commencement of the examination in Akure, Major General Kevin Aligbe, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC NA), emphasized the exercise’s importance in enhancing the officers’ understanding of military operations. He noted that the ongoing security challenges in the country, which have necessitated the deployment of Nigerian Army personnel for internal security operations, make such training imperative.
The officers will be tested in key areas including Tactics and Low-Intensity Conflict, Map Reading, Radio Communication, and the French language—crucial skills in modern military operations.
“The objective of this examination is to broaden the participants’ understanding of military operations, especially in light of the security situation in the country,” said Aligbe. He also urged candidates, particularly those from outside Akure, to prioritize their health during the exercise. “We have deployed medical doctors, paramedics, and ambulances to handle any medical emergencies, and arrangements have been made to provide quality meals throughout the examination period.”
Aligbe further advised the officers to stay focused and minimize unnecessary social interactions. “Though the security situation in Akure is relatively peaceful, it remains unpredictable. Therefore, I urge you to be vigilant, mindful of your movements, and to follow instructions by using only the designated vehicles and buses provided.”
Major General Obinna Onubogu, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, highlighted the significance of the examination in the career development of Nigerian Army officers. He encouraged the participants to demonstrate honesty, commitment, and professionalism throughout the process.
“This is a golden opportunity for the candidates to consolidate their careers by assessing their proficiency and developing their junior leadership capabilities for higher responsibilities in the Nigerian Army. Your performance in this examination will play a pivotal role in determining your career advancement and ensuring the continued success of the Nigerian Army’s operations nationwide,” Onubogu added.
The CMPPE marks an essential milestone for these officers as they prepare to take on greater responsibilities amid the nation’s ongoing security challenges.
