On Thursday, the House of Representatives advanced a bill seeking to amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act of 2007, proposing the creation of an FRSC Special Armed Squad. The bill successfully passed its second reading.
If enacted, the legislation would authorize FRSC officers to carry firearms as part of their duties, enhancing their capacity to enforce road safety regulations and manage traffic.
The bill, co-sponsored by Abiodun Adesida (Ondo) and Olaide Muhammed (Oyo) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received unanimous support following a voice vote in the House, progressing to the next legislative stage.
The proposed amendments would not only arm FRSC personnel but also grant officers at the rank of Deputy Corps Marshal enhanced benefits, including retirement entitlements. The bill further outlines the agency’s role in traffic management, which includes preventing and reducing road accidents, supervising road users, clearing obstructions, and educating the public on safe driving practices.
In addition, the House, following a motion by Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, urged the FRSC to incorporate advanced technology in its operations. This includes using automated traffic enforcement systems, vehicle tracking, and data analytics to enhance efficiency.
The motion was adopted and referred to the House Committee on FRSC for further consideration.
