CSOs Criticize EFCC Over Delay in ₦585m Fraud Probe Involving Betta Edu

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) have called out the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its delay in releasing findings on the alleged ₦585 million fraud involving the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu.

In a press statement signed by Aminu Abbas, Convener of the groups, the CSOs expressed concern over the EFCC’s silence, despite President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspending Dr. Edu in January 2024 following allegations of financial misappropriation.

The suspension came after reports surfaced of the unauthorized disbursement of ₦585 million. Additionally, further controversy surrounds Dr. Edu’s approval of flight fares for ministry staff traveling to Kogi State, a region without an operational airport, raising concerns over possible mismanagement of public funds.

The CSOs also voiced alarm over the disparity in how Dr. Edu’s case is being handled compared to that of Halima Shehu, the National Coordinator and CEO of the National Social Investment Programme Agency. Shehu, who was suspended alongside Dr. Edu, has since been replaced, while no action has been taken to fill Edu’s position.

The groups are demanding transparency from the EFCC, urging it to release its findings on the alleged fraud. They argue that the delay undermines the government’s anti-corruption stance and erodes public trust.

Abbas noted, “While we commend the swift action taken in Halima Shehu’s case, the presidency’s silence on Dr. Betta Edu is concerning. This selective approach to accountability sends a troubling message about the administration’s commitment to justice for all Nigerians.”

He added, “The Nigerian public has the right to know the truth behind these allegations. The delay in disclosing the findings is causing Nigerians to lose faith in the president’s fight against corruption.”

The CSOs urged President Tinubu to take immediate action by replacing Dr. Edu, emphasizing the importance of fairness and transparency in government actions. “The public deserves clarity on these serious allegations, and the EFCC must act swiftly to restore trust in the government’s institutions,” Abbas concluded.
