Defence Minister Receives Accolades from Sokoto Elders for Curbing Banditry

The Isa and Sabon Birni Elders Movement in Sokoto State has expressed gratitude to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for his efforts in reducing violence and restoring security in the region.

Their commendation came after Matawalle’s recent visit to the Isa, Goronyo, and Sabon Birni Local Government Areas, where he assessed ongoing security operations aimed at curbing banditry. The elders acknowledged that the death of notorious bandit leader, Halilu Sububu, has played a key role in the significant reduction of banditry in Isa Local Government Area.

In a statement signed by the group’s convener, Mansur Isa, and made available to journalists on Thursday, the elders expressed their appreciation for the improved security, noting that for the first time in years, residents can now “sleep with both eyes closed.”

“The fear and uncertainty that once dominated our lives have diminished, and we are now able to resume our daily activities without the constant threat of violence,” Isa said. He added that the sharp decline in attacks has brought renewed hope and optimism to the people of Isa and surrounding communities.

The group also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to appoint Matawalle as Minister of State for Defence, calling it a “wise and timely” move. They emphasized Matawalle’s proactive approach, including his recent visits to areas previously under bandit control, such as the Gundumi road in Isa and Sabon Birni.

Furthermore, the elders urged the federal government to reinstate a military camp in Kagara, a move they believe would consolidate the recent security gains. They recalled that the presence of a military base had previously brought relative peace to the area.

“Before the current administration, our town and neighboring communities were at the mercy of bandits,” Isa added. “Today, thanks to the leadership of President Tinubu and Minister Matawalle, we can return to our farms and live with a renewed sense of peace.”
