Ondo Governor Approves ₦73,000 Minimum Wage for Workers

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦73,000 for civil servants, surpassing the ₦70,000 agreed upon by the federal government and labour unions in September. Aiyedatiwa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the upcoming November 16 governorship election, made the announcement during the APC’s campaign flag-off in Ondo West Local Government Area on Saturday.

Speaking at the event, Aiyedatiwa highlighted his administration’s efforts to improve governance and the welfare of workers since assuming office 10 months ago, following the passing of the former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu. He emphasized that civil servants in the state have benefitted from timely salary payments, training opportunities, and promotions.

“Our civil servants are being motivated through various training programs, and their salaries are paid regularly. We do not owe any arrears. Today, I am pleased to announce that our administration will implement the new minimum wage. While the national minimum is set at ₦70,000, we will be raising it to ₦73,000. We will continue to improve your welfare,” the governor said.

Aiyedatiwa also urged voters to turn out en masse for the November 16 election, promising continued development if re-elected.

He further detailed the accomplishments of his administration, including road construction projects aimed at easing the transportation of agricultural produce, bolstering food security, and strengthening the state’s security infrastructure. He cited the creation of forest rangers to protect farmers, alongside collaboration with conventional security agencies, as a significant achievement in enhancing local security.

In education, the governor noted the renovation of primary and secondary schools and the employment of additional teachers. The health sector has also seen improvements, with increased salaries for medical personnel to curb the “japa” syndrome — the mass migration of professionals seeking better opportunities abroad.

Additionally, Aiyedatiwa highlighted youth empowerment initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance, as well as the ongoing renovation of the Akure sports stadium to promote sporting activities in the state.

Earlier in the event, Hon. Abiola Makinde, a House of Representatives member and Director General of Aiyedatiwa’s campaign council, praised the governor’s performance, noting the numerous people-centered programs that have improved the lives of Ondo residents. He encouraged voters to support Aiyedatiwa’s re-election bid by using their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) on election day.

Ade Adetimehin, the state APC chairman, expressed confidence in Aiyedatiwa’s chances, predicting an 80 percent victory for the party in the upcoming election. He urged party members to return to their units and canvass support for the APC candidate.
