Sokoto Government Subsidizes Food Prices by 55%

The Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, inaugurated a special committee on Monday to oversee the sale of assorted food items at a 55% discount to residents of the state. This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to alleviate the economic hardships faced by the population.

Governor Aliyu stated that his administration had procured various essential commodities and foodstuffs, which will be sold at the discounted rate. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to benefit all residents, regardless of their political, ethnic, or religious backgrounds.

During the inauguration ceremony, the governor highlighted the challenges posed by recent economic developments, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the global economic downturn. He explained that his administration had introduced several palliative measures to cushion the impact on the people of Sokoto State.

“We are all aware that since the inception of the current administration, numerous economic challenges have emerged, both nationally and globally. In response, various palliative efforts have been introduced at both federal and state levels to mitigate the effects,” Aliyu remarked.

He also noted that Sokoto State had previously provided free essential commodities to residents and introduced subsidized mass transit services to ease transportation difficulties.

“In this new phase, the state government has procured food items and other essential commodities, which will be sold at a 55% discount. This will help families access the goods they need for their well-being,” he added.

Aliyu assured that the initiative would be sustained until the country’s economic situation improves, with food distribution extending to all 244 wards in the state. He urged wealthy individuals and corporate entities to support the program by providing additional assistance to the needy in their communities.

In his remarks, the committee chairman, Chiso Dattijo, praised the governor’s decision, calling it a timely and much-needed intervention to address the ongoing economic challenges.
