Key Insights from Meeting Between FG, Labour Leaders Revealed

The Federal Government has shared details on its recent engagement with organized labour, emphasizing the need for regular dialogue. Speaking after the meeting on Wednesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the government’s commitment to maintaining open communication with labour leaders to prevent crises.

The meeting, which took place at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation in Abuja, aimed to establish a platform for continuous dialogue. Idris explained that the discussions were general in nature and not focused on any specific issue such as the proposed new minimum wage.

“These are just general discussions. The government is always eager to engage with labour, and this is one of such engagements. We will continue to interact with them. We don’t wait until there is tension before we engage,” he stated.

The Minister added that the meeting represents a renewed commitment by the government to proactive engagement with organized labour on various issues affecting the country. He noted that the talks have been productive, and the government intends to keep the dialogue ongoing.

When pressed for details on the meeting’s outcomes, Idris said they are still at the discussion stage and have not reached any conclusions that can be shared with the public.

“A lot of things were discussed. But like I said, this is a work in progress. We have not yet reached a point where we can share specific details with Nigerians. What is more important is that there will be continuous engagement between us and labour for the good of the country,” he reiterated.

When asked whether the recent fuel price hike was addressed during the discussions, Idris emphasized the broader objective of the meeting, stating, “This is part of our ongoing engagement with labour for the country’s benefit. Labour is an essential component of our society. Government is there for everyone, including labour, so we will continue to engage for the good of the country.”
