Abuja National Mosque Makes History with Appointment of First Igbo Imam

In a historic move, the Abuja National Mosque has appointed Professor Iliyasu Usman as its first-ever Igbo Muslim Imam. He is set to deliver his inaugural *khutbah* (sermon) today during the Jumm’at prayer, marking a significant milestone in the mosque’s history.

The appointment of Prof. Usman has been met with widespread celebration within the Muslim community, particularly by the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON). The group, in an official statement, hailed the appointment as a recognition of his unwavering dedication to Islamic scholarship and leadership.

SEMON noted that Prof. Usman’s appointment is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of divine responsibility, calling on him to guide the community in worship and service to Allah. The group also commended the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of the President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for fostering inclusivity in religious leadership across the country.

SEMON expressed optimism that Prof. Usman’s new role would further uplift the Igbo Muslim community and foster greater unity within the broader Nigerian Muslim society.

Muslims from across Nigeria are expected to gather at the Abuja National Mosque to witness this historic event. Prof. Usman will join the ranks of two other active Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in leading Juma’ah and daily congregational prayers. Their rotation is necessary, especially as the fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura from Southwest Nigeria, remains on extended sick leave.
