Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed plans to implement a new minimum wage of ₦85,000 for workers, with the aim of further increasing it to ₦100,000 by January 2025.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Wednesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu outlined the state’s commitment to improving the welfare of its civil servants. The ₦85,000 wage, he noted, is ₦15,000 higher than the new minimum wage announced by the federal government in July.
“I am glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we discussed with our union, is ₦85,000,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He emphasized that the decision is not meant to compete with other states but is based on Lagos’ financial capacity and the need to provide a “living wage” for its workers.
“I would like to come back to you in January to say I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos to ₦100,000,” he added, expressing his ambition to further improve civil servants’ earnings in the near future.
Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that the move underscores the state’s commitment to the welfare of its workforce, ensuring they are adequately compensated amidst the rising cost of living.
