The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (KADSIEC) has officially announced the results of the 2024 Local Government Elections held on October 19, 2024, confirming the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the clear winners across all local governments in the state.
In a statement made by the Commission’s Chairman, Hajiya Mohammed, she expressed appreciation to the people of Kaduna State, particularly the voters who turned out in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights. “We commend the people of Kaduna State, especially the voters who came out in their numbers to exercise their democratic franchise,” Mohammed said.
According to the official declaration, eight political parties participated in the elections, with the APC sweeping all 23 local government chairmanship positions and all 255 councillorship seats across the state. “By the power vested in the Commission, I hereby confirm the results as earlier collected and returned by the returning officers. APC won the 23 local government chairmanship positions and the 255 ward councillorship positions across the state,” she affirmed.
The chairman proceeded to list the local governments where the APC secured victories, including Birnin-Gwari, Chikun, Igabi, Ikara, Jaba, Jema’a, Kachia, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, Sabon Gari, Sanga, Soba, Zango-Kataf, and Zaria.
In addition to the chairmanships, the APC also dominated the ward councillorship elections. “The ruling party cleared the 255 councillorship positions as declared by the returning officers,” Mohammed detailed. The breakdown of the results includes Birnin Gwari (11 wards), Chikun (12 wards), Giwa (11 wards), Igabi (12 wards), Ikara (10 wards), Jaba (10 wards), Jema’a (12 wards), Kachia (12 wards), Kaduna North (12 wards), Kaduna South (13 wards), Kagarko (10 wards), Kajuru (10 wards), Kaura (10 wards), Kauru (11 wards), Kubau (11 wards), Kudan (10 wards), Lere (11 wards), Makarfi (10 wards), Sabon Gari (11 wards), Sanga (11 wards), Soba (11 wards), Zango-Kataf (11 wards), and Zaria (13 wards).
Mohammed praised the electorate and the state for the peaceful conduct of the elections, saying, “The peaceful and orderly conduct of the election is a credit to the voters and the people of Kaduna State. It shows that democracy is alive, and we will continue to build on the successes recorded towards democratic consolidation.”
She also commended the Commission’s officials for their professionalism and dedication throughout the electoral process. “I commend our Commissioners, the Secretary to the Commission, Directors of the Commission, Electoral Officers, their assistants, and other staff of the Commission who have worked tirelessly to ensure the success of this exercise,” she said.
The elections saw the participation of eight political parties, namely ADC, AAC, APGA, LP, NNPP, PDP, PRP, and YPP. Despite the widespread involvement, the APC emerged as the dominant party across all local government areas.
Governor Uba Sani, after casting his vote at the LEA Kawo polling unit O47, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the elections, describing them as free, fair, and peaceful. “The elections were generally free, fair, and peaceful, with only minor issues reported in three polling units and wards,” he noted.
The governor further emphasized the significance of local government elections and commended the turnout across the 23 local government areas. He expressed confidence in the outcome, stating that the APC had conducted extensive campaigns throughout the state and urged all voters to maintain peace, reminding them that elections come with winners and losers.
Governor Sani concluded by expressing his optimism that the electoral process would result in credible outcomes, reinforcing the democratic principles of Kaduna State.
