NYSC Kicks Off Zamfara Tree Planting Initiative to Tackle Climate Change

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has inaugurated a tree-planting campaign in Zamfara State, aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting environmental sustainability.

The initiative was launched at the Government Girls Day Secondary School (GGDSS) in Bungudu, located within Bungudu Local Government Area. The event marked a key step in the NYSC’s broader efforts to safeguard the environment across Nigeria.

Muhammad Ahmed, the NYSC Coordinator in Zamfara, emphasized that this campaign aligns with the scheme’s nationwide objective of environmental protection. He highlighted the importance of trees in society, underscoring their long-term benefits for future generations.

“Our mission is to impact lives, particularly at the grassroots level. This tree planting exercise in Bungudu represents a vital contribution to that cause,” Ahmed stated.

In his remarks, the Emir of Bungudu, Hassan Attahiru, expressed gratitude to the NYSC for its forward-thinking initiative, noting that it would help protect the community from desertification and the harmful effects of wind erosion. He stressed that the benefits of the project would extend not only to the current generation but also to future ones.

Recalling his participation in the NYSC in Ogun State in 1984, the Emir reflected on how the program fostered long-lasting relationships and contributed to national unity. He thanked the NYSC for its ongoing role in strengthening ties across the country.

Prior to the event, the NYSC Coordinator and his team paid a courtesy visit to the Emir at his palace, where Ahmed formally introduced himself. He also sought continued support from the emirate for the welfare and security of corps members serving in the area.

The tree-planting campaign is expected to serve as a model for other communities, as Nigeria continues to confront the growing threat of climate change.
