MTN Nigeria Rolls Out Eco-Friendly, Sustainable SIM Cards

In a move to further its sustainability efforts and reduce carbon emissions, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has launched the pilot scheme of its biodegradable, paper-based SIM cards. These eco-friendly SIM cards align with MTN’s “Project Zero” goals, which aim to cut down emissions and reach net-zero emissions by 2040.

In a statement released last weekend, MTN Nigeria emphasized that the biodegradable SIM cards are designed with the environment in mind. They promote product lifecycle management that supports circularity and minimizes waste. The shift away from plastic-based SIM cards is seen as a significant step towards curbing plastic pollution, reinforcing MTN’s commitment to adopting sustainable practices in its operations.

“This initiative, driven through a local supplier, reflects MTN’s commitment to empowering local businesses and boosting economic growth through sustainable partnerships,” the company stated.

During the launch event held at MTN’s Lagos office, Tobe Okigbo, Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Nigeria, highlighted the advantages of the paper-based SIM cards over traditional Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) plastic SIMs. He noted that the biodegradable cards can naturally decompose and are recyclable, helping to lower waste pollution and reduce carbon emissions from both production and disposal. “Our new eco-friendly SIM cards not only tackle the environmental challenges posed by plastic SIM cards but also reinforce our dedication to sustainability, waste reduction, and support for local Nigerian businesses,” Okigbo said.

Adekemi Adisa, General Manager of Sustainability and Shared Value at MTN, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The well-being of our people and the environment drives our innovation. Our recyclable SIM cards are part of a broader commitment to sustainability, encouraging our customers to make eco-conscious choices and leading the way toward a greener future for Nigeria.”
