BREAKING: Farouk Lawan Released from Prison After Completing Sentence

Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives from Kano State, has been released after completing his five-year prison sentence. Lawan was convicted for soliciting and accepting a $500,000 bribe while serving as the chairman of the House ad-hoc committee tasked with investigating fuel subsidy fraud in 2012.

His conviction, initially handed down by a lower court, was upheld by the Supreme Court on January 26, 2024, solidifying the charges related to his request for a $3 million bribe from Nigerian billionaire and oil magnate, Femi Otedola.

Lawan’s release marks the conclusion of a high-profile corruption case that gained national attention during the fuel subsidy scandal over a decade ago.
