A businessman from Onitsha, Chikwado Eze, has tragically died during a ritual meant for “fortification” in Inyi, a community within Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Eze, who hailed from Ugbaike community, had recently secured a visa for an overseas business trip and sought spiritual fortification through a ritual conducted by a native doctor. As part of the ritual, the native doctor reportedly instructed that Eze be buried alive for one and a half hours.
On the appointed day, Eze arrived for the ritual, accompanied by his father, Uwakwe. He was buried in a shallow grave as directed. However, when he was exhumed after the specified time, Eze was found to be in a severely weakened state, drenched in sweat. The native doctor attempted to revive him using incantations, but when Eze failed to respond, he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Local authorities have since arrested both Uwakwe and the native doctor for interrogation. Uwakwe, who had previously been ostracized by the Ugbaike community for involvement in dangerous charms, denied any wrongdoing, claiming that his son had made all the arrangements for the ritual and merely invited him to witness it.
