Zamfara Govt Moves to Establish Persons with Disability Board

In a renewed effort to promote social inclusion and protect individuals with special needs from discrimination, the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the Persons with Disabilities Law in Zamfara State.

A statement issued by Suleman Ahmad Tudu, Senior Special Assistant (Media) to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), confirmed the government’s determination to bring the law into effect. The law, which was enacted by the Zamfara State House of Assembly and signed in 2022, had been neglected by the previous administration.

The law aims to establish a Board that will protect persons with disabilities from all forms of discrimination and promote their access to opportunities in various aspects of life across the state.

During a courtesy visit by the Zamfara State Chapter of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday, the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammed Nakwada, assured the delegation that Governor Lawal’s government would fast-track the implementation of the law.

“I have tasked the Permanent Secretary of Cabinet Affairs to review the Persons with Disability Law and prepare an actionable executive summary for submission to His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal, within a week. We have no time to waste,” Nakwada stated.

He added, “The implementation of this law will greatly improve the social welfare of persons living with disabilities in the state. Governor Lawal is deeply committed to such initiatives, and I assure you that he will ensure its swift execution.”

Nakwada also highlighted the importance of providing special attention to individuals with disabilities, emphasizing that their unique circumstances deserve priority. He expressed regret over the delay in the law’s implementation but reassured that the government is now moving forward with urgency.

He further acknowledged the contributions of Save the Children and other stakeholders who played a crucial role in advocating for the law, assuring them that their efforts would not be in vain.

Alhaji Usman Nahuce, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Association, expressed gratitude to the SSG for receiving them despite his busy schedule. He recounted the association’s long struggle for the recognition of their rights, which he believes is now on the verge of being realized under the current administration.
