Kano Governor Stands Firm on Local Govt Poll Despite Court Ruling

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has declared that the state will proceed with its scheduled October 26, 2024, Local Government election, despite a Federal High Court judgment that annulled the poll on grounds of “card-carrying NNPP members serving as executive officers within the election commission.”

Yusuf made his stance clear during a flag presentation ceremony for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) chairmanship and councilorship candidates from Kano’s 44 local government areas. The event took place on Thursday evening at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium.

Addressing the audience, the governor emphasized, “The state will not allow anyone to disrupt the peace that our citizens are currently enjoying.” According to Yusuf, both the Kano State Government and the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) are constitutionally empowered to proceed with the election.

“We have met all legal requirements and completed all necessary preparations for the conduct of the elections on Saturday, so the polls must proceed as planned,” he stated, underscoring the government’s commitment. “We are aware of efforts by certain individuals aiming to derail this election, but with the grace of Allah, they will not succeed. The elections will be conducted peacefully and credibly.”

Yusuf reiterated that the state government is prepared to swear in candidates declared winners by the electoral commission immediately following the election. He encouraged NNPP members to mobilize effectively within their wards, describing them as true supporters of the party.

He projected confidence that the NNPP would secure all 44 chairmanship and 484 councilor positions, citing the widespread support the party enjoys across the state.

Acting National Chairman of the NNPP, Dr. Audu Ajuji, also expressed optimism, anticipating a peaceful election and asserting that the NNPP is positioned to sweep all elective seats without complications.

State NNPP Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, lauded the turnout at the event, describing it as an exceptional show of support for the party’s candidates.
