Israel Launches Retaliatory Air Strikes on Iran; U.S. Reacts

Israel conducted air strikes on military targets in Iran late Friday, actions described by the United States as a “self-defense measure” in response to a recent ballistic missile attack from Tehran. U.S. officials confirmed they were informed in advance of the strikes.

According to White House National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett, the Israeli air strikes targeted specific military assets as a “response to Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Israel on October 1.”

A U.S. defense official, speaking anonymously, emphasized that the United States had no direct involvement in the operation, though it was briefed beforehand. The extent of the prior notification and details shared between Israel and the U.S. were not disclosed.

White House sources later confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been briefed on the situation and would continue to receive updates from national security advisors.
