A Nigerian Navy personnel, identified as Leading Seaman Akila A., has allegedly shot and killed a fellow naval officer during a dispute in Dansadau, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 25, at about 3:12 a.m.
The two officers, both deployed to Operation Sheto Yanma at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Dansadau, were involved in an argument that escalated, leading Akila to reportedly open fire at close range.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust and stated that the military has launched an investigation. According to Buba, “On 25 October, at about 0312hrs, a naval personnel, LS Akila A., deployed at FOB Dansadau for Operation Fansan Yamma, under questionable circumstances opened fire sporadically, killing a fellow military colleague.”
Following the incident, Akila was immediately arrested, disarmed, and detained. Buba added that a thorough investigation is underway, after which the case will be referred to a court martial to address the misconduct.
“Meanwhile, the administrative procedure for notifying the deceased’s family is ongoing, which is why his name has not yet been made public,” he noted.
Buba also urged media outlets to approach the story sensitively to avoid further distress to the bereaved family.
