Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has approved a new minimum wage of ₦80,000 for the state’s civil servants, effective November 1, 2024.
Additionally, the governor has sanctioned an increase in the monthly pension for retired state employees and allocated ₦7 billion to reduce the backlog of outstanding gratuities.
The announcement was made in a statement on Saturday by Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah. Governor Diri acknowledged the economic challenges facing workers, noting the impact of rising living costs on residents of Bayelsa.
The statement read: “To address these difficult times and in compliance with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment Act 2024), the Prosperity Administration of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri has approved the sum of ₦80,000 as the minimum wage for state workers.
“Governor Diri has also approved an increase in the monthly pensions for retired state workers. The related consequential adjustments across various sectors, as agreed with state Labour leaders, will be implemented accordingly.
“To further alleviate the burdens on our retired senior citizens, His Excellency has also approved a ₦7 billion payment to reduce outstanding gratuity liabilities.”
Governor Diri expressed appreciation to the state’s workforce and their representatives for their patience, commitment, and support of the Prosperity Government’s policies and programs.
