Kano Local Govt Chairmen Receive Certificates of Return

The Kano Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has presented certificates of return to the newly elected 44 Local Government Chairmen following the recent elections across the state.

KANSIEC Chairman, Prof. Sani Malumfashi, presided over the issuance ceremony on Sunday, confirming the commission’s mandate to certify the new officials. He encouraged the newly elected chairmen and councillors to fulfill their roles diligently for the benefit of their communities.

“Under the requirements of the electoral process, our commission holds the responsibility to issue certificates of return to the elected leaders as the legitimate representatives of their local governments. These officials are now tasked with addressing the needs of their respective Local Government Areas,” Malumfashi stated.

The report also highlighted that Governor Abba Yusuf is expected to officially swear in the chairmen soon at the Government House in Kano.

In the recent elections, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) won all 44 chairmanship positions and 484 councillorship seats contested, as announced by the commission. Six political parties participated in the election, including AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP.

On the eve of the elections, Governor Yusuf reiterated that the polls would proceed as planned on October 26, 2024, despite attempts to disrupt them. “The state will not allow anyone to destabilize the peace enjoyed by the citizenry,” Yusuf affirmed, adding that all legal conditions had been met for the elections to proceed smoothly.

This announcement comes in the wake of a Federal High Court ruling disqualifying the KANSIEC chairman over allegations of political affiliation. Despite the ruling, KANSIEC proceeded with the elections and certification process.
