Gov Sheriff Charges LG Chairs to Implement New Minimum Wage November

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed local government chairpersons across the state to implement the new minimum wage for council workers starting in November 2024.

The directive was issued on Tuesday in Asaba during a meeting with leaders of the state chapters of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), and the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE). Also present were key government officials, including the Auditor-General for Local Governments, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, and the Accountant-General of the State.

Governor Oborevwori noted that the recent enactment of the local government autonomy law has increased the responsibilities on councils, emphasizing the importance of supporting council workers by implementing the new wage structure as mandated.

In addition, he reminded council leaders to adhere strictly to procurement regulations in all contract-related matters. The governor further recommended organizing a retreat for relevant council officials to improve financial management practices, with the involvement of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to ensure transparency and accountability.
