MPB Explains Why New Minimum Wage Payments for Pensioners Delayed

Amid growing concerns from retired military veterans regarding the delay in implementing new pension rates, the Military Pensions Board (MPB) has clarified that the delay is due to pending fund releases, not the ongoing electronic verification process.

In a statement on Monday, the Board’s Chairman addressed the veterans, urging them to disregard rumors linking the delayed payments to the electronic verification exercise, which is intended solely for updating the pension records. He assured that the verification is routine and aims to establish an accurate list of pensioners on the payroll to support precise budgeting and planning.

The Board launched a nationwide electronic verification on July 1, 2024, which was extended to conclude on October 31, 2024. This digital approach replaces the previous in-person verifications to ease the process for pensioners, eliminating the security risks, high transportation costs, and logistical burdens, particularly for those living abroad. “With the electronic system, pensioners can now verify from the comfort of their homes without the need for physical gatherings,” the Chairman noted, highlighting the system’s success so far.

Addressing concerns about potential underpayments, AVM Irumheson assured veterans that no one would be deprived of their entitlements, including any arrears, as the Board is actively collaborating with relevant authorities to secure the required funds. He added that the Board is committed to transparent communication, briefing the 5-member Ministerial Standing Committee regularly and advising veterans to stay in contact with the committee for updates.

The Chairman concluded with an appeal for patience, reaffirming the Board’s dedication to veterans’ welfare and promising that all outstanding entitlements would be paid as soon as possible.
