Zamfara Federal Lawmaker Joins APC, Leaves PDP

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) gained an additional seat in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, following the defection of Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas shared the news with members during the plenary session, reading Gumi’s defection letter aloud on the House floor.

According to Speaker Abbas, Gumi, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, cited internal issues within the PDP as his reason for leaving. He highlighted that his constituency currently has two PDP chairmen, reflecting broader internal and external crises affecting the party in Zamfara. “The party lacks structure in the State,” Speaker Abbas explained.

Hon. Gummi, known for his unwavering dedication to his constituents, has a record of advancing critical issues such as safety, education, and community empowerment. As Chairman of the House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations, he has applied his engineering background to enact key safety policies across sectors like electricity and construction, ensuring a safer environment for Nigerians.

Beyond his legislative role, Hon. Gummi has significantly impacted his community. His establishment of the Sheikh Abubakar Gummi College of Advanced Studies, as well as his commitment to girl-child education and awarding over 400 scholarships, underscore his dedication to educational empowerment in Zamfara State.

On the infrastructure front, he has facilitated the development of essential projects, including roads, healthcare centers, and school facilities, which have improved the quality of life for thousands in his constituency. Additionally, he has led community security initiatives, partnering with law enforcement to counter armed banditry and improve safety across Zamfara.

Hon. Gummi has also championed economic development by supporting local businesses with resources, skills training, and financial assistance, creating job opportunities for young people and strengthening local families. His efforts have earned him multiple accolades, including an ambassadorial award from the Global Institute for Safety.

His move to the APC is seen as part of his broader vision for a more prosperous and secure Zamfara and Nigeria. Many anticipate that his alignment with the APC will bring further opportunities for impactful policies and initiatives in Gummi/Bukkuyum.

With Hon. Gummi’s extensive experience and dedication, his new role in the APC is expected to drive meaningful changes and progress for the people of Zamfara.
