The Osun Masterminds (TOM), a coalition of civil society organizations, has criticized the delay in implementing the new national minimum wage in Osun State, warning that it is damaging the morale and well-being of civil servants.
Speaking during the October edition of the State of the State address in Osogbo, the group’s Executive Director, Professor Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, expressed disappointment with Governor Ademola Adeleke for failing to implement the new wage in October. Oyedokun-Alli noted that the delay has eroded the trust civil servants have in the administration, emphasizing that the current minimum wage is insufficient to meet their basic needs.
He stated, “The administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke, which claims to be pro-masses, should have taken action on the minimum wage by now. It’s disappointing that the Osun State government has not clearly communicated whether it will pay. Even paying tomorrow would be too late. Even the ₦70,000 we’re discussing has already lost value.”
Oyedokun-Alli further argued that the state government could afford a higher minimum wage given its revenue from federal allocations, calling on the administration to begin payment from October. “We would welcome it if they paid more than ₦70,000 because the economy is tough. Given the state’s resources since His Excellency took office, it is feasible. There’s no acceptable excuse for this delay, and we call on the government to commence payment immediately.”
He also criticized the state’s spending priorities, highlighting that many governors operate large convoys at taxpayer expense yet hesitate to implement a livable minimum wage. Additionally, Oyedokun-Alli pointed out that Governor Adeleke’s administration employs an excessive number of special advisers, many of whom lack designated offices. He urged the governor to end “delay tactics” and prioritize payment.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Government disclosed that the minimum wage negotiation committee, led by Chief of Staff Kazeem Akinleye, is still working to resolve issues related to the wage adjustment.
