The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) announced on Saturday that they would continue their indefinite strike, despite the Federal Government’s partial payment of withheld salaries.
On Saturday, the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation confirmed that it had released one of the four months’ worth of salaries owed to the university workers. This partial payment follows months of unpaid salaries that initially led to the strike, which has disrupted university activities across the country.
SSANU National President, Mohammed Ibrahim, emphasized that key university officials—such as Vice-Chancellors, bursars, and registrars—also remain unpaid, exacerbating the strain on university operations. According to Ibrahim, about 98% of SSANU and NASU members have complied with the strike action, and there is a firm resolve not to resume work until all demands are met.
Speaking further, Ibrahim acknowledged that while some members have received one month’s salary, the majority have not received the remaining arrears. “Yes, they paid one month out of four months,” he stated. “We shall be meeting to assess the situation, as not everyone has been paid yet.”
The JAC’s stance suggests the strike will continue, pending the release of the outstanding salaries.
