Governor Zulum Advocates Chinese Leadership Model for Nigeria

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has suggested that Nigeria consider adopting a leadership selection system similar to China’s, which prioritizes structured, merit-based selection over traditional elections. Zulum proposed this idea during the 24th National Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Agricultural Engineers, held at the Nigerian Society of Engineers headquarters in Abuja. The statement was released on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Ahmed Bundi.

In his address, Zulum explained the potential benefits of the Chinese model, saying, “I am always referring to the election system in China. In China, they practice selection rather than pure election. They identify credible leaders with proven integrity, based on their past records, and assess the performance of those who have held public office. The best candidates are then selected and, subsequently, subjected to an election.”

Zulum emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges go beyond just leadership and extend to followership, urging a focus on both elements. “Our problem here in Nigeria is not just about leadership but also followership. We must focus on both components rather than one. As much as we need good leaders, we also need citizens who can distinguish between right and wrong,” he stated, highlighting that responsible governance is a partnership between leaders and citizens.

Additionally, Zulum highlighted the importance of technological advancement in tackling Nigeria’s food security issues. He described the conference as an opportunity to share insights and explore the role of innovation in agriculture.

“Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and biotechnology hold the potential to revolutionize our agricultural practices,” he noted. “These tools can help us build resilient, sustainable food systems to support our growing population.”

Zulum’s call reflects a growing interest in alternative governance approaches as Nigeria faces complex challenges requiring both innovative leadership and engaged followership.
