The national power grid experienced another collapse on Tuesday, resulting in a widespread power outage across the country.
According to data reviewed by our correspondent, power generation dropped significantly around 1:39 pm, with generation levels reported at 2,711 megawatts just prior to the collapse. Earlier in the day, power generation had peaked at 3,934.77 MW around 6 am, before decreasing to 3,631 MW by 1 pm.
However, between 2 pm and 3 pm, the grid’s power output plunged to zero, effectively halting electricity distribution nationwide.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed the incident, describing it as a “partial disturbance” around 1:52 pm on November 5, 2024. Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s spokesperson, attributed the collapse to a series of line and generator trips that destabilized the grid, leading to the disturbance.
Mbah further clarified that the impact of the collapse was not uniform across the entire grid. “Data from the National Control Centre indicates that parts of the grid remained unaffected by the main disruption,” she noted.
In a bid to restore electricity, TCN engineers have been working to reconnect affected regions. As of 2:49 pm, power supply had resumed in Abuja, and efforts are underway to restore service to other areas.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our electricity customers,” Mbah stated, reassuring the public of ongoing efforts to restore full power.
