FG Faces Backlash from Corps Members Over Unpaid ₦77,000 Allowance

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are calling on the Federal Government to implement the newly promised minimum wage of ₦77,000, citing the rising economic hardship they face. The corps members took to social media on Wednesday to voice their concerns, expressing frustration over continued delays in adjusting their allowance.

Despite the government’s approval of the new minimum wage in July 2024, corps members report that they are still receiving the previous allowance of ₦33,000, which they argue is inadequate given the soaring cost of living. Many stated that the old allowance no longer covers basic expenses like transportation and food, let alone other daily needs.

Another user, @Arbdoolbasid_Jr, questioned, “How can we even concentrate on our primary assignment with ₦33,000 in this current economic situation?”

Citing specific challenges, @Eze_na_ujari detailed his monthly expenses: “High transportation costs leave me with just ₦26,000 after spending ₦5,000 on transport and ₦2,000 on Community Development Service (CDS) contributions.”

Others highlighted poor living conditions in NYSC lodges. “Suffering and wickedness,” @blazzin_225 described, referencing dilapidated bathrooms, toilets, and inadequate accommodation that add to the financial strain.

One plea, directed at government officials, urged, “See us as your children too. We’re dying,” posted by @officialABAT.

The Federal Government’s approval of the new minimum wage followed the expiration of the previous wage structure in April. Corps members are hopeful that the increase will soon be extended to them to alleviate their financial burdens.
