Competition Welcome, but Continued Petrol Imports Not Allowed – Dangote Refinery

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has voiced its support for fair competition that promotes innovation and quality, highlighting its anticipation of the commissioning of the four state-owned refineries as pledged by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

The refinery cautioned that while deregulation is essential, it should not justify the importation of substandard petroleum products or actions that undermine Nigeria’s national interests. This statement came in response to comments by Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited CEO, Robert Dickerman, denying allegations of blending low-quality petroleum products.

“At Dangote Petroleum Refinery, we are committed to making Nigeria self-sufficient in petroleum production, and we welcome competition that encourages innovation and quality,” the refinery stated. “However, we will not stand by while continuous importation and blending of petroleum products harm our economy. A strong, self-sufficient energy sector is crucial for Nigeria’s economic growth, and we advocate for policies that protect our industries and citizens.”

Dangote reiterated its support for deregulation and industrialization, grounded in the belief that these principles should drive sustainable economic growth while safeguarding Nigerians from exploitation.

“The health and safety of Nigerians should never be compromised in the pursuit of profit,” the statement added. “Unlike Dickerman’s stance, deregulation should not serve as a gateway for importing substandard products or undermining national interests.”

The refinery further urged the government, Nigerian businesses, and patriotic citizens to remain committed to protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and economic independence.

“The choice is clear: either support industrialization or allow Nigeria to become a dumping ground for inferior products while exporting jobs. For decades, cartels have hindered the development of Nigeria’s refining capabilities, keeping the nation reliant on imports. It is time to end this cycle and ensure that Nigeria’s energy sector serves its people’s interests,” the statement concluded.
