CDS Deploys Troops to Counter Lakurawa Terrorists in Kebbi

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has ordered the deployment of military forces to the conflict-ridden Augie Local Government Area in Kebbi State following a violent assault by a newly-identified terrorist group known as Lakurawa. This response comes after the group launched a deadly attack on Mera village, resulting in the tragic loss of over 15 lives.

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, had urgently appealed for federal intervention to combat the escalating violence. He highlighted the need for immediate action to restore peace and protect citizens in the affected areas.

Upon arrival in Kebbi, the troops, outfitted with armored tanks and sophisticated weaponry, were received by the state’s Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, before proceeding to Mera. In an ensuing confrontation, the military forces successfully engaged the terrorists, forcing them to retreat. During the operation, the troops also recovered cattle rustled by the fleeing militants.

Abdullahi Idris Zuru, the governor’s media aide for communication and strategy, emphasized the importance of the deployment, stating that the rise of new armed groups has severely disrupted life for rural residents. “The governor is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and properties for all Kebbi State citizens,” Zuru said, explaining that this commitment prompted the governor’s call for federal assistance to counter terrorism across the state.

The recent Lakurawa attack on Mera has displaced numerous residents and left the community grappling with the profound impact of the violence. The state government, along with federal forces, is working to restore security and offer relief to those affected.
