Residents of Saki, in Saki West Local Government Area of Oyo State, are in a state of fear following the deaths of a doctor and three nurses at Almusharaf Hospital, Oke Sunah, within a span of 72 hours.
The tragedy began three days ago when a nurse at the hospital passed away. Since then, the doctor and two additional nurses have also died, with the latest deaths occurring between Tuesday and Wednesday.
A local resident, Mr. Adekunle Lawal, shared his concerns: “Three days ago, a nurse died. On Monday, another nurse died, and then yesterday, the doctor and yet another nurse passed away. We’re all afraid because we don’t know the cause of their deaths.”
Lawal added, “The doctor at the hospital is known to be a quack. It’s possible that they all treated a patient with a contagious disease, which wasn’t handled properly. This is a large hospital that performs minor surgeries and occasionally invites outside doctors for assistance. But if it was a contagious disease, why have only the staff members been affected, not the patients?”
The sudden deaths have led to various speculations among residents, with some suspecting food poisoning. “Maybe one of them ate food and shared it with the others,” Lawal noted. “But this is all speculation. Only a proper autopsy can determine the real cause. All of the deceased have been buried according to Muslim rites. We urge the Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to investigate.”
Mr. Adeola Fehintola, a legal practitioner in the area, echoed this call for investigation. “Saki is very close to the border, and there’s a possibility that someone with a contagious disease recently crossed into the area. The authorities need to act urgently to identify the actual cause of these deaths,” he said.
Local health authorities are yet to comment, but there is an increasing demand for urgent action to uncover the cause of these tragic losses and ensure the safety of residents and hospital staff.
