CCC Cautions Media: Don’t Give Lakurawa Insurgents Publicity

The Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC) has urged Nigerians and stakeholders to refrain from giving undue publicity to Lakurawa, a nascent insurgent group operating in Kebbi and Sokoto states.

In a statement issued after the CCC’s monthly meeting, the Chairman, Major General Chris Olukolade (rtd), called for a focus on addressing the threat posed by the insurgents rather than sensationalizing their activities. He emphasized that excessive media attention could inadvertently embolden the group.

“The CCC is concerned that sensationalism surrounding certain groups may be counterproductive, as it provides them with undue visibility and encouragement,” Olukolade said. “The rush to label these elements as terrorists, without careful assessment, could also create mistrust within communities and incite unnecessary fear.”

He further clarified that officially designating any group as a terrorist organization is the sole responsibility of the Federal Government, as stipulated under the Terrorism (Prevention) Act of 2011.

Warning Against Exploitation

Olukolade also cautioned against “conflict merchants,” individuals or groups who exploit security challenges for political or financial gain. He warned that such actions could worsen the country’s security crisis and undermine genuine peace efforts.

“The CCC urges these actors to desist from manipulating this situation for personal benefit,” he said.

Security Efforts Lauded

The CCC commended the Kebbi State Government and the Nigerian military for their collaborative efforts in tackling the Lakurawa threat. It praised the military’s decisive intervention, which has helped restore peace to Mera town and nearby communities.

“The successful dislodgment of Lakurawa fighters and the recovery of hundreds of rustled livestock demonstrate the effectiveness of a coordinated approach to addressing security threats,” the statement noted.

The organization called for increased investment in community-based intelligence gathering, better communication during joint operations, and stronger inter-agency collaboration to protect vulnerable border areas.

Ondo Gubernatorial Election

On the upcoming November 16 gubernatorial election in Ondo State, the CCC urged security agencies to remain impartial and ensure a peaceful environment that allows voters to exercise their rights without fear.

Fuel Supply Boost

The CCC also welcomed the recent agreement between the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and the Dangote Group. The partnership is expected to enhance petrol supply and potentially reduce fuel prices, bringing relief to Nigerians.
