Sokoto Govt Approves Monthly Allowance of ₦200,000 for Principals

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, has approved a monthly maintenance allowance of ₦200,000 for principals of secondary schools across the state. This initiative is aimed at addressing immediate infrastructural needs in schools without delays.

The announcement was made on Monday during the Sokoto State 2025 Citizens Budget Discussion held at the Sultan Abubakar Maccido Institute of Quranic and General Studies.

During the event, former Deputy Governor of the state, Chiso Abdullahi, appealed to the governor to allocate funds to school principals for quick maintenance and minor repairs. He noted that such a move would empower principals to mobilize carpenters, masons, and other workers for urgent repairs without undergoing prolonged government approval processes.

Responding to the appeal, the governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, confirmed the approval of ₦200,000 for each secondary school principal. The allowance will cover all schools across the state’s 23 local government areas and will take effect from January 2025.

Bawa said, “In line with the appeal made by the former deputy governor, the governor has approved ₦200,000 monthly for each school principal. The payment will commence in January 2025 to ensure maintenance issues are promptly addressed.”

Review of Traditional Rulers’ Allowances

In a related development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has directed the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Dadi Adare, to urgently review and adjust the allowances of traditional rulers in the state. This directive follows a plea by the district head of Kilgori, Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, at the event.

Kilgori urged the government to increase allowances for traditional rulers to reflect the current economic realities. The governor assured the gathering that the matter would be given due consideration to support traditional institutions in their roles.

The announcements highlight the government’s commitment to improving education and traditional governance amid prevailing economic challenges.
