NLC Confirms Ondo Workers to Start Receiving ₦73,000 M’Wage Next Week

The Ondo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has assured government workers that the new ₦73,000 minimum wage will be paid with their November salaries.

Ademola Olapade, the acting chairman of the Ondo NLC, gave this assurance on Sunday in Akure while addressing journalists about the proposed nationwide strike over delays in implementing the new wage in some states.

The national leadership of the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had announced plans to commence a nationwide strike on December 1, citing the failure of several state governments to implement the agreed minimum wage.

However, Mr. Olapade, who led the labour side in negotiations with the state government, confirmed that Ondo workers would not join the strike, as all necessary arrangements for the payment had been concluded.

“We will not participate in the strike in Ondo State because we have reached a clear agreement with the state government,” Olapade stated. “The payment was scheduled to begin last week but was delayed due to a minor clerical error, which has now been resolved. By next week, all state and local government workers will receive their November salaries reflecting the new minimum wage.”

He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to prioritizing workers’ welfare and ensuring their rights are protected.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had announced on October 14, 2024, that the ₦73,000 minimum wage would take effect starting in November, marking a significant step in improving civil servants’ living standards in Ondo State.
