The National University Commission (NUC) has granted permission for the London Academy of Business School, in partnership with the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom, to operate in Nigeria. The inaugural academic session is scheduled to commence in January 2024 at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria in Abuja.
A delegation from the University of Sunderland, led by Dr. Derek Watson, an associate professor from the Faculty of Business Law and Tourism, has assured that students in Nigeria will receive the same academic standards as their counterparts in the UK. The management has also pledged to adhere to the guidelines provided by the NUC.
Dr. Watson stated after the meeting with the Executive Secretary of NUC, “The meeting was very productive. The University of Sunderland has over 30 years of experience, and we emphasize the importance of compliance procedures. We will ensure that qualified academics from LABs deliver our programs, providing students with an experience equivalent to those studying in England.”
Dr. Larry Jones-Esan, President/Director of Studies at the London Academy of Business School, highlighted the purpose of their visit to the NUC, which is to obtain operational recognition in Nigeria. He stressed the significance of this recognition, as it is essential for their courses to be acknowledged by NUC to ensure the value of the degrees and eligibility for the NYSC program.
He added, “We have obtained the license, which is recognition to run this program. This will be completed within a week, and we are hopeful that we will commence university operations in January 2024.”
During their visit, the team inspected the Public Service Institute of Nigeria in Abuja, which will serve as the study center. The institute’s Administrator and CEO, Abdul-Ganiyu Obatayinbo, expressed satisfaction with the facilities provided, indicating that they are better than what the University of Sunderland has in the UK.
The Public Service Institute offers various facilities, including a 500-seat auditorium, multiple 30-seat capacity halls, hostels with 202 bedrooms, a hospital, security quarters, a sports complex, an entrepreneurship center, and more, to create a conducive environment for teaching and learning.
The London Business School, in partnership with the University of Sunderland, is set to offer a range of undergraduate and master’s level courses in Nigeria, covering fields such as computer science, business and management, network system engineering, business administration, international business management, and education leadership.
