Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) in Sokoto took a significant step on Monday by commencing an indefinite strike, resulting in the shutdown of the State House of Assembly complex. The Chairman of the Sokoto State Chapter, Mr. Abubakar Yusuf, addressed reporters in Sokoto, explaining that this strike is an extension of their ongoing battle that commenced in 2020.
As he recounted the journey, Mr. Yusuf mentioned, “We took similar action in 2020, and after interventions from various sectors, an agreement was reached promising full financial autonomy for the legislative arm of the government. Former President Muhammadu Buhari signed an executive order to secure this financial autonomy for the legislature and the judiciary. However, this order faced challenges in the Supreme Court due to resistance from state Governors.”
He further explained, “After addressing these legal complexities, the order was reaffirmed, and the former president initiated a committee for its full implementation. Unfortunately, this progress has now stalled with the change in government.”
Yusuf elaborated on the association’s patience and the 21-day ultimatum issued to the government to address their concerns. He expressed disappointment that no actions were taken in response to their ultimatum.
In consequence, he declared, “Today, we have taken the step of indefinitely closing all State Assemblies, including the National Assembly, until our demands for full implementation are met.”
Yusuf emphasized that the association’s demands include the implementation of CONCLESS conditions of service and the payment of parliamentary staff outfit allowances. He emphasized that their struggle transcends individual interests and serves the national interest by supporting the government’s fight against corruption.
