Following a harrowing 45-day captivity, one of the kidnapped female students from the Federal University Dutsin-Ma in Katsina State has been freed. Muhammad Fatima Ruqqayat regained her freedom after an extensive period held captive by terrorists. Sahara Reporters disclosed that her release came about after a hefty ransom exceeding N4 million was paid, a collective effort between her family and the university’s management.
The initial abduction incident involved at least five female students taken from the university hostel in the North-West region. These students were identified as hailing from various states, including Kwara, Kano, and Niger State.
Earlier reports suggested that despite an initial ransom payment of about N2.5 million made by the victims’ families, the terrorists continued to hold the students captive, demanding further payments from both the government and university authorities. A relative of the victims had expressed concern, stating, “They (the terrorists) are demanding another ransom from both the government and the school management.”
This ordeal has highlighted the continued threats posed by banditry and the plight faced by innocent students, underscoring the pressing need for effective measures to ensure the safety and security of educational institutions across the country.
