Police require N245 billion to address patrol van shortages, according to Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun. Each of the 1,537 divisional police headquarters across the country needs at least four patrol vehicles.
Egbetokun highlighted poor funding and inadequate manpower as challenges facing the Nigeria Police Force during a Tuesday appearance before the House of Representatives.
He emphasized the difficult operational environment and the need to double manpower to meet international standards. To equip all divisional headquarters, approximately 6,148 vehicles are required, costing an estimated N245.92 billion.
The IG stressed the necessity for increased funding, stating that limited resources hinder the police’s ability to address security challenges effectively.
Retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Adedayo Adeoye, echoed these concerns, urging President Bola Tinubu to declare a six-month state of emergency to combat insecurity and advocating for improved funding and the withdrawal of police officers from VIP escort duties to enhance manpower.
