During a recent visit by Analyzer news to the Gusau-Dansadu road in Zamfara state, there was a noticeable absence of vehicle movement, prompting concerns about the impact of persistent attacks, killings, and kidnappings by bandits who have seized control due to the deteriorated condition of the road.
The 110-kilometer federal government road, constructed in 1982 during the administration of former President Shehu Shagari, has suffered neglect with no repairs despite its significant socio-economic importance. In 2002, minor repairs were initiated by the first civilian Governor, Ahmed Sani Yarima.
The road, crucial for connecting Zamfara to Kebbi and Kaduna states, has now become a perilous route due to numerous potholes, cracks, and the constant presence of armed bandits. This situation has resulted in loss of lives, widespread kidnappings, and substantial ransom payments.
Residents, such as Musa Garba, emphasize the necessity of heavy security escorts for motorists, with groups of 20 or more vehicles accompanied by no fewer than 30 soldiers due to the high risk of bandit attacks.
Despite numerous complaints from the public, motorists express dissatisfaction with the authorities’ lack of urgency in repairing the road and providing adequate security. Alhaji Ahmed Abdul Aziz and Malam Ilyasu Gusau have halted business activities on the route due to insecurity and the road’s poor condition.
Malam Ibrahim Kazauda and the anonymous village head stress that the area has become a hotspot for bandits, urging both state and federal governments to address the road’s repair and security challenges.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Dauda Lawal on Media, Mustafa Jafaru Kaura, acknowledges the government’s awareness of the situation. He outlines measures taken, including the deployment of security personnel to Dansadau road and the recruitment of 4500 Community Protection Guards for a long-term solution to banditry.
Kaura reassures that the government is committed to restoring peace and eliminating criminal activities in the state, expressing hope for positive changes in the near future.
