Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, stirred controversy as he advocated for a comprehensive audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) while vehemently opposing the President’s involvement as a petroleum minister within Nigeria’s governance structure.
Addressing attendees at the ongoing Bank Directors Summit hosted at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Sanusi made bold declarations. He underscored the necessity for an immediate audit of NNPCL, emphasizing the imperative nature of such a review.
Sanusi’s stance against the President’s dual role as the nation’s petroleum minister resonated as a pivotal aspect of his discourse. He highlighted this while tracing back to the circumstances surrounding his departure from the CBN governorship, a position he held from June 2009 to February 2014. Sanusi hinted that his outspokenness on such critical matters might have been a catalyst for his exit.
Adding further weight to his statements, Sanusi emphasized the critical need for the sustained operation of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC). He stressed their continued role until the banks collectively reconcile and fulfill their obligations to the financial system.
