Power Outages Hit Four Northern States As DisCo Faces Bulk Supply Shortfall

In a concerning turn of events, four northern states – Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi – are currently grappling with power outages attributed to a significant shortfall in bulk power supply from the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo).

On Sunday, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, the Head of Corporate Communications at Kaduna DisCo, issued a statement acknowledging the disruption. He assured customers that normalcy would be restored promptly as soon as bulk supply was reinstated at key load centers within the DisCo’s franchise.

“The Management of Kaduna Electric wishes to inform its esteemed customers that it has encountered a loss in bulk power supply, resulting in the current outage in Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states. Power supply will resume once we receive the necessary bulk supply at load centers across our franchise. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience,” the statement read.

The report, however, did not delve into the specific reasons behind the sudden loss of bulk power supply. Notably, the ongoing challenge of insufficient gas supply has cast a shadow over electricity generation across Nigerian power plants for more than a month. Both electricity-generating companies and distribution entities, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria, have voiced concerns over the impact of low gas supply on power generation.

Addressing the issue, Minister of Power Bayo Adelabu, in a meeting with stakeholders on Thursday, pledged to explore lasting solutions to the problem, acknowledging the critical need for a comprehensive resolution to prevent future disruptions.
