The arrest of protesters in Minna, Niger State, who were demonstrating against the increasing cost of living in Nigeria, has drawn condemnation from civil society groups and religious leaders.
Among those criticizing the arrests are Amnesty International Nigeria and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, led by the Sultan of Sokoto.
The protesters, comprising youths and women, expressed grievances about economic hardship and high living expenses during the demonstration.
The police arrested several individuals, including Aisha Jibrin, who led the protest, on allegations of violence.
Both Amnesty International and the Jama’atu Nasril Islam called for the immediate release of the detainees, emphasizing the right to peaceful protest and urging the government to address the underlying issues causing distress among citizens.
Additionally, the Centre for Accountability and Open Leadership emphasized citizens’ right to express discontent with government policies and called for the release of those arrested unless evidence of violence or criminal activity is presented.
